Evaluation

Final Major Project Evaluation
Planning

I knew that I was going to France on holiday, and I was taking my cameras with me, once we had been told that we had our Final Major project, after the Easter holidays.
I had a conversation with my tutor and I explained that I was going on holiday to France to Peyrat-le-Chateau, and I was going to film around the village.

Further planning of my project involved,

  • Mindmap - I found this most effective it gave me the chance to layout all my ideas.
  • Idea generator
  • Looking at genre of travel videos
  • Mission Statement
  • Colourway
Research

In order to research my project I did the following,

  • SWOT analysis - this allowed me to consider the strengths and weaknesses of my ideas.
  • Website research - Once I  had looked at the websites, I then looked at other tourist information videos, and looked at the different styles of videos for inspiration for my video.
  • Questionnaire and analysis of results
  • Interviews
  • Focus Groups

I found all my research effective, however the most effective was the interviews because I had a chance to talk to people and get information in their own words.
Initially I thought of doing an opening scene to a movie, however the only problem was there wasn’t any research available on the opening scene. Therefore, I changed my idea into the style of a tourist information video.

Filming

My filming took place in a french village called Peyrat-le-Chateau. Before I started filming I had a walk around the village to assess the areas for filming. I decided to film the village, lake, churches, shops.

I found it difficult at times to steady the camera and the footage was therefore difficult to achieve. The weather was an issue during filming as it was raining. As well as using my Canon 1100D I also used a Gopro Hero 4. I decided  to use the GoPro because I had a stabilizer.

Editing

I edited the footage using Imovie.
Once I got into the editing I tried to correct it and it became blurry so in parts of the film it has remained shaky which was disappointing.
During editing I researched typical French jazz style music and added in a voice over and text.

What Went Well?

I thought the elements that were most successful in my project were the editing and the filming elements because I could add my own aspect to the video through my own eye.

What Didn't Go Well?

I feel that the filming could have been slightly better because I didn’t know exactly what I was going to film, so I filmed in the style of an opening scene.  I had to edit the video with different footage.

Improvements

I didn’t feel there was any need to change anything in my film whilst I was editing.
When I started editing I wasn’t sure of the video.
However, as the editing went on, I started to like the video. I therefore was  happy with the final outcome.

People said that my video was very well filmed and edited. I have also been informed that the local people of Peyrat-le-Chateau have also liked it.

What Have I Learnt?

Since completing my final product I have learnt about the history and information of Peyrat-le Chateau.
I have also learnt the different camera angles and the techniques required to make ashort film.
If I did this again I would think more carefully about the planning stages of my video so my ideas would be clearer before I start filming.

                                Evaluation Interviews

In order to evaluate my final project further I asked several people to view my video and give feedback.
asked the following questions

  • what did you think of my video?
  • In what ways does it work as a tourist information video?
  • What do you think of the style of filming and the use of text and voice over?

Rebecca Watkins

What did you think of my video?
Absolutely brilliant - so interesting as you capture the history and all the quirkiness of French village life.

How did it work as a tourist information video?
It was extremely effective as it made the whole area come to life - you got a feel of what it would be like to visit here, the laid-back atmosphere, pretty stone buildings, historic churches, picturesque lakes etc.  It also referred to the hotels, shops and supermarket facilities that you could use.

What do you think of the style of filming and the use of text and voice over?
The filming worked well as you used a mixture of walk-through effects, panoramic shots of landscape/lakes and close-ups of the stream and flowers to provide interesting detail.  The script completely matched the filming/shots - really well done.  The music really added the right holiday atmosphere - and the loud bells transported you straight to France.  The voice-over was not too intrusive - gentle.

Another one of my interviewees said that they really enjoyed my video. They felt it worked very well as a tourist information video because it gave a broad picture of different aspects of the village. They thought the filming had a 'holiday' feel to it which went well with the music

Some of the feedback I received was from two people who live in Peyrat Le Chateau;
